The fire marshal had the last word
Red Crab had a beautiful build-out and a decorative floating ceiling that hid the structure above. They were ready to open. The fire marshal looked up, looked at the plans, and said: you need sprinkler heads under those floating ceilings before you can open.
The retrofit
We came in after the rest of the construction was done. Heads went through the floating ceiling without tearing the design apart. The hydraulic calcs were rerun to account for the floating-ceiling obstruction. Pipe ran above where it wouldn’t be visible to diners. The fire marshal walked the system and signed off. Red Crab opened.
Why we share this one
It’s a common story in restaurant builds: a designer-driven ceiling treatment that satisfies the AHJ in spirit (sprinklers above) but not in code (heads also need to reach below floating elements). The before-and-after pair makes the rule clear without needing a thousand words of NFPA citation.
